What it does

Citations show you the exact place in the original file that an extracted value came from. Validations flag whether that value has been checked against the document, so you know which fields to trust and which to review.

When to use it

  • You need to audit AI output, or meet compliance requirements, by tracing each extracted value back to its place in the file.
  • You review extracted fields by hand and want to focus only on the ones that could not be validated automatically.
  • You process PDFs or JPEGs under 100 pages, including tables inside them, and a reviewer must confirm values before they are used.

How it works

Turn it on

The feature is enabled per workspace, then switched on per project in Project Settings.

Process files

From then on, the app shows a citation and, where applicable, a validation result for each extracted value.

Review in the app

Each field shows a validation icon. Fields marked ⚠️ need a person to check and confirm them.

Try it

Citations and validations are an app feature. The documented API response has no citations: GET /v1/files/{fileId}/values gives you the values, and you review their sources in the fileAI app. The feature is enabled per workspace. Contact your account manager or support@file.ai to turn it on. Once it is available on your workspace:

Open Project Settings

Go to your project’s settings.

Turn on Citations & Validations

Find the Citations & Validations toggle, enable it and save. If you don’t see the toggle, ask your admin or support to enable it.

Open a processed file

Open a file once it has finished processing, and switch to the AI Schema tab.

Check the validation icons

Each field shows its validation status. Click the icon to see the citation and validation result.

Understand the result

Each field in the AI Schema tab carries one of two icons. Click it to open the citation and validation result in the right panel. When a field shows ⚠️, validate it by hand:

Open the result

Click the ⚠️ icon and look at the right panel for the citation and validation result.

Read why it needs review

The comments explain what could not be confirmed.

Correct and confirm

Type the correct value if needed, then mark the field as validated. The icon changes to ✅.
To correct values in bulk from your own system, use PATCH /v1/files/{fileId}/values. See Correct a value.
